Pastoralism is the livelihood system and way of life of pastoral communities. The
economic foundation of pastoral societies primarily depends on livestock production
and development. This is directly linked to the management and use of rangelands, as
well as the community’s adaptability to the climatic conditions of arid and semi-arid
areas. Moreover, the mobility of pastoralists from place to place reflects a strategic
way of sustaining their livelihoods. In addition, agro-pastoralism integrates livestock
development with dry-land farming and other socio-economic activities that strengthen
the resilience of pastoral livelihoods.
