Oromia Irrigation and Pastoral Development Bureau and Gudina Tumsa Foundation Launch Initiatives to Boost Pastoralists Livelihoods and Pastoral Resilience

The Oromia Bureau of Irrigation and Pastoral Development, in collaboration with the Gudina Tumsa Foundation and with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has launched a groundbreaking Cross-Disciplinary Research Initiative for Sustainable Development and Policy Reform Advocacy in the Borana pastoral areas. The initiative brings together researchers, policymakers, and local stakeholders to tackle long-standing challenges including climate resilience, resource management, and livelihood sustainability facing pastoral communities in the region. By integrating scientific research, indigenous knowledge, and policy advocacy, the program seeks to develop evidence-based solutions that enhance food security, economic stability, and environmental conservation. This partnership represents a critical step toward sustainable pastoral development, said a representative from the Oromia Bureau. By bridging research, policy, and community engagement, we can create lasting change for Borana’s pastoralists.

 Mr. Roba Turchee, Deputy Head of the Bureau of Irrigation and Pastoral Development, who highlighted the impact of ongoing projects.

The Finna initiatives have resolved critical water shortages, empowering Pastoralists to engage in various developmental activities and economic growth, he stated that Pastoralist are now cultivating and storing animal feed to mitigate drought. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, stating, the support of development partners is vital in sustaining progress toward improving pastoralists livelihoods. 

The initiative also seeks to integrate traditional knowledge with scientific research to strengthen natural resource management, early warning systems, and community-based development strategies. A statement from the  Directorate of Pastoral Livelhood Research, Studies and Early Warnings of Oromia Bureau of Irrigation and Pastoral Development reaffirmed its commitment to fostering sustainable solutions for pastoral communities. The success of initiatives aimed at improving pastoral livelihoods hinges on the strong support and cooperation of partner organizations.  By combining natural resource management, advanced early warning systems, and the deep-rooted knowledge of pastoralist communities with cutting-edge scientific research, stakeholders can effectively document, promote, and strengthen sustainable development practices.This innovative, cross-stakeholder approach ensures that pastoral communities not only adapt to changing environmental conditions but also thrive through resilient and science-backed solutions. The synergy between indigenous wisdom and modern research creates a powerful framework for long-term prosperity.When we integrate community expertise with scientific advancements, we unlock sustainable solutions that truly benefit pastoralists,” said a Director of Pastoral Livelhood Research, Studies and Early Warnings.
